“I am considering a transition to a career in a different field. I am feeling nervous and overwhelmed by the process. I am realizing much of this fear is about money. Will I make enough to support myself? Will I need to give up a lot in the process? I find myself unable to take action. How can I work through this fear?” Dan, 41, financial advisor.

Dan shares a real fear many of our clients face and one more heightened by the state of our current economy. This fear can leave us unable to see our path and/or often too paralyzed to move forward. But financial fear, like any, should not be viewed as an insurmountable obstacle. I encourage Dan, and any clients facing similar barriers, to set aside some time for reflection and explore the following:

  • Define the unknown. Get clear about your financial situation­–what are your monthly expenses/income, budget and look at where you can reduce spending. Ask yourself: What is my biggest financial fear? What is the worst thing that could happen? Is that likely? How would I handle that? Read Strategies for Facing and Overcoming Fears for more support.
  • Explore your values related to money. Ask yourself: What does money mean to me? How do I want to define success? Click here for a great exercise on exploring your beliefs around the green stuff.
  • Get support. After reflecting on the questions above, share your thoughts and responses with someone you trust–whether it is a friend, partner or coach/mentor. In the process of doing so, most people find their anxiety begins to dissipate.

Working through these questions will give you more clarity about your next steps.
