For more than 15 years, the Career Strategists team has had the opportunity to support entrepreneurs in creating sustainable businesses that support them inside and out.  What are the secrets for working less and experiencing more and how do you become the master of—not the slave to—your business?

Below are a few insights Career Strategists founder/president, Renee Trudeau, recently shared with Entrepreneur magazine, the New York Times and at her sell-out session at the Austin RISE conference on how to do just this:

  1. Know your purpose: why are you in business?  Why do you do what you do? Create/post a purpose statement. 
  2. Take time to cultivate depth/mastery:  build on your brilliance, where do you stand out? Are you leveraging these strengths? This will guide your service/product offerings and reflect and strengthen your unique brand.
  3. Harness the Power of Focus: what three things should you spend 80% of your energy/time on?  Do you spend your day on high-impact, revenue producing work (or just plow through to-do lists)?
  4. Do it different: question your business model, how you’ve set up your team structure and how you spend your day!Be agile and adaptable. Don’t marry yourself to your business or revenue model—evaluate every quarter.
  5. Slow down and pause (often): take a one day retreat every quarter to ask 1) what are my top 3 priorities this quarter and 3) what feeds/drains me in my business? Re-align, then course correct, as needed.
